A collection of Updike's nonfictional prose written between 1955 and 1965. This copy has been signed by John Updike as a part of the "First Edition Circle" at Kroch's and Brentano's in Chicago, and the original card (as opposed to the bookmark used by Kroch's and Brentano's in other First Edition Circle books) so indicating is laid in. A Fine copy (quite light shelf wear to base, light surface scratch to front board, and tiny spot to rear board; expected gap at top of heavy page block), in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY TERRY MCMILLAN on the title page and SIGNED BY JOHN EDGAR WIDEMAN at his Preface. Also, SIGNED BY CHARLES JOHNSON at his contribution, and SIGNED BY ALICE WALKER at her contribution. A Fine copy of this substantial anthology, SIGNED BY TERRY MCMILLAN, SIGNED BY JOHN EDGAR WIDEMAN, SIGNED BY CHARLES JOHNSON, and SIGNED BY ALICE WALKER. Given Charles Johnson's criticism of Alice Walker's "The Color Purple" for what Johnson saw as a negative portrayal of African-American Males, it is interesting to find both of their signatures in the same book. A Fine copy signed by 4 important African-American Authors, and quite uncommon as such.

A Near Fine copy (spine ends bumped, otherwise fine, expected light age toning to pages), in a Fine dust jacket (modest surface rubs, which, given the type of jacket used, we would expect to be common), SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO. This is the First edition of Eco's sequel to Diario minimo (1963) and is exceedingly difficult to find when both signed and in this condition. A virtually Fine copy, SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO. Scarce.

This is the First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. The book is Fine (with just a bit of bumping and tiny wear) in a Very Good+ dust jacket. The top edges of the pages have the expected age/dust darkening. The board corners are sharp with only a hint of wear. The handsome jacket has a few short tears and small corner chips and the inside face of the Jacket has some archival tape, apparently added for strength. The Jacket has some handling soiling and some stained spots. This anthology is dedicated to Ernest Hemenway (Ernest Hemingway) whose story " My Old Man" appears in the anthology. The story is "the first book published in the United States to contain work by Hemingway" according to Hanneman and is one of the two stories he had left after the valise containing all of his manuscripts was stolen at the Gare de Lyon in 1922. Hemingway wrote in A MOVABLE FEAST, page 73, that O'Brien had broken all the rules to take the story because it had never been published in a magazine and that, throughout the book (with but one exception) he had misspelled his name as "Hemenway". Other author's include Sherwood Anderson, Theodore Dreiser, Jean Toomer, and Edna Ferber.
