The TRUE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of this famed work, one of a mere 1,000 copies printed. This Limited Edition was published prior to the trade edition (which is often wrongly identified as the first edition). The Limited Edition was printed and bound for distribution among friends of The Inner Sanctum, an "insider" group of individuals at the Publisher, Simon and Schuster. The term "Inner Sanctum" was first used internally at Simon and Schuster in the late 1920's when a certain room at the publishing house became a hangout for staffers who played Ping Pong, sorted the mail, hosted after-hours gatherings, conversed, and exchanged ideas. The "Inner Sanctum" became famous in publishing circles and was know and referred to by others such as "Publishers Weekly" and "The New York Times". Following John Galsworthy's Introduction to the book, the Publisher presented the following statement from The Inner Sanctum: "This is the first edition of Bambi. A thousand copies have been printed and bound. None are for sale. The Inner Sanctum thinks that Bambi will ultimately have a large sale, and hopes that a copy of this edition will not only be pleasant to read, but of possible increased value at a future time. The regular trade edition will appear in the near future. It will be printed in 12 point Caslon type (instead of 11 point, as used in this edition), and will be a full 12mo in format. It will, we believe, be a better looking book than the present volume. This edition, however, will always be our favorite, since it is the first version in English of a novel we shall be as proud to have on The Inner Sanctum's list ten years from now as today." This is a Very Good or better copy (shelf wear, corner tips worn, minor darkening to the spine--no dust jacket, as issued) of a book not often found in collectable condition. The hinges are solid and the spine lettering is in nice condition. Copies of this, the TRUE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, are quite scarce, especially in this condition. A nice copy of an enduring classic.

A Near Fine book (one corner and spine ends bumped, a few spots to the puce topstain, possible repair to the rear hinge, but we think that it may instead be a production flaw) in a Very Good + dust jacket (some browning, a few closed tears, some edgewear, and a small amount of rubbing and creasing). Given the book's reception with the reading population and its consequent great popularity, copies were quite well read and, while this copy is not flawless, it is not easy to find copies in this nice of a condition. This is one of the few recently published books that can claim to be a genuine classic. Oddly, this First Edition, published in the US preceded the first English edition by three years. Quite popular, the book was often reprinted and reissued, but this is the genuine First Edition, First Printing.

A Very Good copy (gentle wear at extremities, spine ends bumped, lower corner of front board bumped inward, bubbling and a spot of soil to rear board, small impression to edge of front board and corresponding edge of spine-apparently the result of a rubber band or something of the sort, light offsetting to free endpapers from dust jacket as is common) in an about Very Good dust jacket (spine toned, a little handling soil, some small tears, a longer tear to fold of at junction of spine and rear board, small open tear to rear panel at flap fold, some wrinkling to rear panel). The dust jacket has retained its coloring quite well. A nice copy (we've made it sound worse than it is) of the fourth and and final book in Milne's iconic Pooh series.

A Very Good copy (light edge wear, spine rebacked and expert repair to joints, hinges expertly repaired with binder's tape, gilt at top of page block darkened and a bit worn at front edge, prior owner's signature and date, and evidence of removal of a thin strip of paper to the front free endpaper). All in all an attractive (especially when compared to the many worn copies that are found) copy of the first edition, first printing of this much-loved tale. The story evolved from a series of fantastic bedtime stories which Grahame to his son, Alastair and, although the publisher initially doubted that a book with animals as heroes could succeed, it went on to become one of the all-time classic children's books. "The Wind in the Willows" was, in fact, so successful that it allowed Grahame to quit his hated job at a bank and retire to the countryside, where he spent the rest of his time along the much more charming banks of the Thames, and in boats like his characters. In fact, the book was so popular that over 100 editions of it were published within 60 years. This copy has minor spotting to the exterior, but considerably less spotting than we have seen on other copies. The bottom front corner of the title page and (much less so, of the frontis) is darkened, but the leaves have very little foxing, especially when compared to other copies--the pages being all in all rather clean and nice. A nice copy of a wonderful book which seems increasing difficult to obtain, especially in nice condition.
