A Fine copy of the first trade edition (spine head gently pushed), in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY E. L. DOCTOROW on the title page.   Doctorow's very-highly regarded tale of a young, fatherless boy from the Bronx who becomes the protégé of a murderous Mobster.   The  novel won the 1990 PEN/Faulkner Award (which Doctorow won again in 2006 for "The March"), the 1989 National Book Critics Circle Award (which double Doctorow again achieved with "The March"), and the 1990 William Dean Howells Medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters (as the best novel of the then-previous 5-year period).  Furthermore, the novel  was the runner-up for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize (won by Oscar Hijuelos for "The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love").   The book also provided the basis for the 1991 Robert Benton crime film starring Loren Dean, Dustin Hoffman, Steven Hill, Nicole Kidman as Drew, and Bruce Willis. Until 1975 when he became a writer, Bunker was repeatedly in trouble, was imprisoned in San Quentin for the first time at age 17, and spent three stints in prison, totaling 18 years.   Written with great authenticity, "dog eat dog" is the story of three men who, once released from prison, must adapt themselves to life on the outside.  This copy has been signed by William Styron at his Introduction to the novel. Copies signed by Bunker are uncommon, and copies signed by William Styron are even more so.
