THIS BOOK IS NOT A PART OF OUR SALE. A Fine copy, in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY CORMAC MCCARTHY on the half-title. The first novel in Cormac McCarthy's acclaimed Border Trilogy, and the nicest copy we have seen, whether signed or unsigned. The signature was obtained by an acquaintance of McCarthy shortly after the book was published, and prior to McCarthy's fame, in a small bookshop that McCarthy regularly visited while doing his laundry at a local laundromat. "All the Pretty Horses", which won both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, propelled McCarthy to fame. (Prior to this book, McCarthy struggled for success as a writer. When writing his now higly-regarded novel "Blood Meridian", McCarthy wrote to another aspiring author: "Sorry your book didn't do better but it's a damned tough business. I've been writing novels for 24 years and have never sold any.") The book also served as the basis for the 2000 Billy Bob Thornton movie of the same title starring Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY MCCARTHY NEAR TO THE BOOK'S PUBLICATION.

The TRUE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of this famed work, one of a mere 1,000 copies printed. This Limited Edition was published prior to the trade edition (which is often wrongly identified as the first edition). The Limited Edition was printed and bound for distribution among friends of The Inner Sanctum, an "insider" group of individuals at the Publisher, Simon and Schuster. The term "Inner Sanctum" was first used internally at Simon and Schuster in the late 1920's when a certain room at the publishing house became a hangout for staffers who played Ping Pong, sorted the mail, hosted after-hours gatherings, conversed, and exchanged ideas. The "Inner Sanctum" became famous in publishing circles and was know and referred to by others such as "Publishers Weekly" and "The New York Times". Following John Galsworthy's Introduction to the book, the Publisher presented the following statement from The Inner Sanctum: "This is the first edition of Bambi. A thousand copies have been printed and bound. None are for sale. The Inner Sanctum thinks that Bambi will ultimately have a large sale, and hopes that a copy of this edition will not only be pleasant to read, but of possible increased value at a future time. The regular trade edition will appear in the near future. It will be printed in 12 point Caslon type (instead of 11 point, as used in this edition), and will be a full 12mo in format. It will, we believe, be a better looking book than the present volume. This edition, however, will always be our favorite, since it is the first version in English of a novel we shall be as proud to have on The Inner Sanctum's list ten years from now as today." This is a Very Good or better copy (shelf wear, corner tips worn, minor darkening to the spine--no dust jacket, as issued) of a book not often found in collectable condition. The hinges are solid and the spine lettering is in nice condition. Copies of this, the TRUE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, are quite scarce, especially in this condition. A nice copy of an enduring classic.

A Fine copy, in a Near Fine dust jacket (one tiny rub at bottom of the front panel and a short linear indentation to the rear panel) of the first American edition of Peter Carey's debut novel, SIGNED BY PETER CAREY. The winner of the 1981 Miles Franklin Award. (Established under the will of Miles Franklin---author of "My Brilliant Career"---the Miles Franklin Literary Award is awarded each year for the best Australian 'published novel or play portraying Australian life in any of its phases'.) The novel also was the basis for the 1985 film of the same name directed by Ray Lawrence and staring Barry Otto and Lynette Curran. (Peter Carey and Ray Lawrence adapted the novel for the big screen). While the film eventually won multiple AFI awards, the nature of the work was such that 400 audience members (out of 2,000) walked out during the film's premier at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival. Signed copies of any first edition of this book are uncommon, and signed copies of the first American edition in this condition are quite so. A Virtually Fine copy of Peter Carey's debut novel, SIGNED BY PETER CAREY.

A Very Good copy (small spot to front panel, some edge wear and rubbing, very small bookshop sticker to front pastedown, mildly canted, endpapers barely cracked--much less than usual, aeg, pages rather clean with virtually none of the common foxing), lacking the rare dust jacket. No known priority between the first UK edition and the first American edition. The story of a pampered youth who is rescued at sea by rougher men on a fishing vessel who put him to work against his will and better him, a book written by Kipling while he and his new bride were in Vermont, and the only Kipling book that is set exclusively in the US. The book served as the basis for the 1937 film of the same name starring Spencer Tracy as Manuel, the Portuguese-American captain of the boat that rescued the lad (played by Freddie Bartholomew), became a surrogate father to him, and then drowned. Spencer Tracy won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in the film, which was also nominated for three other Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Film Editing, and Best Writing, Screenplay. A Very Good copy.

A Near Fine book (one corner and spine ends bumped, a few spots to the puce topstain, possible repair to the rear hinge, but we think that it may instead be a production flaw) in a Very Good + dust jacket (some browning, a few closed tears, some edgewear, and a small amount of rubbing and creasing). Given the book's reception with the reading population and its consequent great popularity, copies were quite well read and, while this copy is not flawless, it is not easy to find copies in this nice of a condition. This is one of the few recently published books that can claim to be a genuine classic. Oddly, this First Edition, published in the US preceded the first English edition by three years. Quite popular, the book was often reprinted and reissued, but this is the genuine First Edition, First Printing.

A Fine, unread, copy of the uncommon UNCORRECTED PROOF of Palahniuk's first published book SIGNED BY CHUCK PALAHNIUK. Palahniuk's first attempt at a novel, ("Invisible Monsters") was rejected by publishers as too disturbing. He then concentrated on "Fight Club" which he intended to be even more disturbing. (The People's Republic of China banned the book due to the information it provided regarding the production of explosives.) His ignoring such criticism of his first attempt allowed him to produce "Fight Club", the novel which launched him to literary fame. The book formed the basis of the 1999 film of the same name starring Brad Pitt. Although the film failed in the cinema, it thereafter became a cult movie. As is often the case with an author's debut book, the initial printing was relatively small. Logically, the proof printing would have been even smaller. Signed copies of the Uncorrected Proof are scarce, especially when in Fine condition. (Please note: the small white card shown in the photograph accompanying this listing is not attached to the book.) A FINE copy of the UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY SIGNED BY CHUCK PALAHNIUK.

A Fine Uncorrected Proof (light crease mark to lower right corner of front wrap, small glue creases to spine--no reading creases, small stray mark to lower spine) of a relatively early novel in the King canon. Proof copies of this novel are quite difficult to find, especially when in a condition this nice. The book served as the basis for the 1990 television miniseries. Warner Brothers has announced production of a new movie based on the book to be released in 2011. A beautiful copy of an early and difficult Stephen King Proof.

THIS BOOK IS AVAILABLE AT A 30% DISCOUNT. PLEASE INQUIRE. A Very Good copy of the First Edition, FIRST ISSUE, of this Steinbeck novella, INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY JOHN STEINBECK, in an about Very Good dust jacket. Based on Steinbeck's own experiences as a hobo, the novella (the title of which was taken from a famed line of Burns' poem "To a Mouse"----"The best laid schemes o' mice an' men/Gang aft agley") tells the tale of two migrant workers during the Great Depression. The cynical George Milton befriends the mentally weak, but physically strong, Lennie Small, and the two of them pursue their dream of owning a farm. The book, now studied in high schools and colleges across the Country, and required reading in many of them, was a frequent target of censors. Ironically, it was both banned from numerous public and school libraries and was selected as a Book of the Month Club selection even prior to its publication. The critically acclaimed work is listed on the American Library Association's list of Most Challenged Books of the 21st Century and served as the basis for several films, the most famous of which starred Burgess Meredith as George and Lon Chaney, Jr. as Lennie and was nominated for four Oscars. The book is in Very Good condition (some spots and a horizontal mark to front board, mildly canted, faded topstain, spine darkened, edge wear to spine ends and bottom board tips). The price clipped dust jacket (with trimmed flap corners) has minor chipping and edge wear, and some surface loss to the spine and rear panel). John Steinbeck has inscribed and dated the front free endpaper: "For Walter _______ / John Steinbeck '37". Only 2500 copies of the first printing were issued (300 of which were review copies). By comparison, the first printing of The Grapes of Wrath consisted of 50,000 copies and the first printing of Cannery Row consisted of 78,000 copies. Accordingly, this is a relatively scarce book on its own and is especially scarce INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY STEINBECK.

A Very Good + to Near Fine copy (topstain faded near spine, otherwise Near Fine with minor toning at base of front board), in an about Fine dust jacket (only the lightest touch of wear, light sunning to spine), SIGNED AND DATED BY KAREN BLIXEN. After she and her then-husband (and second cousin, the Swedish Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke) moved to Kenya in early 1914, the couple established a coffee plantation, hiring locals to work there. Her husband's infidelity, and the couples' general incompatibility, led to their divorce in 1921. The worldwide depression of the early thirties, and the plantation's poor soil, then led the Baroness to return to Denmark where she began writing in earnest, publishing her first book, "Seven Gothic Tales", in 1934. While her debut work met with success, it was "Out of Africa", her second novel, and her best and most famous work, that firmly established her reputation as an author. The novel served as the basis for the 1985 Sydney Pollack film starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, which won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay Adaptation. This copy has been SIGNED AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR on the half-title as follows: "from / Karen Blixen / New York 10.3.1959". Signed copies of any printing of "Out of Africa" are rare, and signed copies of a first edition are rare indeed. A RARE COPY, SIGNED BY KAREN BLIXEN.
