A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of this important collection of Arbus photographs, in a Very Good dust jacket. In 1972, after Arbus' 1971 suicide, the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art conducted a landmark retrospective exhibition of her work. This is the first printing of the first edition of the retrospective's monograph, containing "Two Girls in Identical Raincoats, Central Park, New York City, 1969", which photograph is not present in later printings of the book. A heavy book in its original white boards (front board photographically illustrated with the same illustration as appears on the dust jacket's front panel, Arbus' famed photograph titled "Identical Twins, Roselle, N.J. 1967"), the book has some expected bumping at the spine ends and board bottoms, some indentation lines to the rear board, and some expected mild toning at the page edges. The dust jacket has some expected toning to the edges, some minor edge pushing, two crease marks to front flap, and two small closed tears to the front panel. All in all, a nice, Near Fine, copy of a rather uncommon book.

A nice photograph of Jack London, presumably at Beauty Ranch, fencing with Spiro Orfans. Orfans, a Greek immigrant, was a painter and a socialist friend of Jack London's who turned to carpentry to earn a living, without great results. Charmian viewed him as a hanger-on at the Ranch, one of many which Jack London allowed there, whose presence Charmian resented and Jack defended. The photograph measures approximately 61/2 inches x 5 inches. On the back is written in pencil, in a small, neat hand "Spiro Orfans-Jack London" and the back of the photo is also stamped "Not to be reproduced / without permission of / The Jack London Estate. A very nice photograph of Jack London, not a mere portrait photograph, but a photograph showing London at play and living the sort of life he lived.
