We maintain a large inventory of used and rare books, most of which are in Fine or Near Fine condition, many of which are signed or inscribed by the author, and a number of which are scarce or rare.  We focus on Victorian Literature, Modern Literature, Uncommon Books, Mysteries, Crime, Autobiography, Poets and Poetry, African-American and Black authors, topics, and history, and Ephemera of various sorts (such as photographs, letters, broadsides, and the like). A Very Good copy, in a Near Fine dust jacket, of this compilation of John Steinbeck's letters, co-edited by Steinbeck's widow, Elaine Steinbeck and Robert Wallsten. The CARLTON SHEFFIELD COPY, with his book plate on the ffep and a photo of Elaine Steinbeck at a book signing pasted to the pastedown, under which there is printed in black ink: "At Philobiblion 11-10-75". A very large and heavy volume with a little expected weakness to the uncracked front hinge, a little shelf and extremity wear, and minor soiling to the top of the page block. The dust jacket is in about Fine condition, with just a touch of wear to the head and heel of the spine. This was Carlton Sheffield's copy and has been BOTH INSCRIBED TO HIM AND SIGNED BY THE EDITORS. Carlton Sheffield was a longtime friend of John Steinbeck's and author of the book "John Steinbeck, The Good Companion". Sheffield had an extensive collection of Steinbeck's work, and, of course, engaged in extensive correspondence with John Steinbeck. The inscriptions read: "For Carlton Sheffield / in Memory of John and / with gratitude and love, / Elaine Steinbeck / October 1975" and "We couldn't have done / it without you. / Robert Wallsten". A story set in Ancient times of a good man living in a Roman city situated in what is now Portugal during the Moor's invasion. A bestseller when originally published in Portugal (1994) and the 1996 winner of The Pegasus Prize for Literature which resulted in the work being published in English for the first time in 1997. A Near Fine copy in the Publisher's original blue pictorial cloth, decorated in gilt and will all edges gilt, (very minor edge wear, one small light scuff to rear board, spine a little darker than the boards, W. H. Smith embossment to ffep, endpapers solid and uncracked), lacking the rare dust jacket, and housed in a very good open-faced slipcase. (There is no known priority between the first UK edition and the first American edition.) The story of a pampered youth who is rescued at sea by rougher men on a fishing vessel who put him to work against his will and better him, a book written by Kipling while he and his new bride were in Vermont, and the only Kipling book that is set exclusively in the US. The book served as the basis for the 1937 film of the same name starring Spencer Tracy as Manuel, the Portuguese-American captain of the boat that rescued the lad (played by Freddie Bartholomew), became a surrogate father to him, and then drowned. Spencer Tracy won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in the film, which was also nominated for three other Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Film Editing, and Best Writing, Screenplay. A Very Good + copy (rather light edge wear, one rather small spot of soil to rear board, front board with a little mild bowing, small book seller's sticker to front paste down) of the first UK edition, in a Very Good dust jacket (price clipped, some very small spots to front panel, some small chips, edgewear, and short tears, ink spot to spine bottom), SIGNED BY JOHN STEINBECK. This cheaply made war-era production is not often found in jacket, and when so found, the jacket is usually quite worn and torn. Signed copies of "The Pearl" are, for some reason, scarce, as are signed first UK editions of Steinbeck's works. A Very Good or better copy of this edition of Rudyard Kipling's Verse in the publisher's original rose cloth, in Three Volumes. The spines are only mildly sunned and there is only the barest of edge wear. Volume I has a couple of small light spots. Top edge trimmed, bottom and fore edge untrimmed. A very nice set. A Very Good copy, lacking the rare dust jacket, SIGNED BY JOHN LE CARRE. A nice copy of le CarrÈ's very scarce second book, featuring le CarrÈ's recurring character, George Smiley, in a detective story, le CarrÈ's only book set outside the espionage community. Le CarrÈ joined the British Army's Intelligence Corps in 1950 and, upon his return to England to study at Oxford, conducted secret assignments for MI5, seeking to obtain information on possible Soviet agents. He continued his work for MI5, and then for MI6, until the great success of "The Spy Who Came In from the Cold", at which time he left the secret service to write full time. It was while working for MI6 in Germany that le CarrÈ wrote "A Murder of Quality". John le CarrÈ is a pseudonym for the author's true name, "David John Moore Cornwell" and this book is signed by him on the title page "David Cornwell / aka / John le CarrÈ". Cleverly constructed, Cornwell's pen name consists of his second forename "John" followed by "le CarrÈ", meaning "the square" in French, as his last name. This is a Very Good, slightly canted, copy of le CarrÈ's very scarce second book, with moderate edge wear and bumping to the corners, as well as a light scratch to the front board, a spot of staining here and there, and wearing a GAI certification sticker at the lower corner of the title page. Remarkably, there is only a touch of sunning to the spine. Quite uncommon in and of itself, the book is even harder to find signed, and here is signed using both the author's given name and his pseudonym.
