A Very Good+ copy of the first edition, first trade printing showing some spotting to the topstain (following a 500-copy limited edition of prepublication copies in a different binding for friends of the author and Publisher), in a Very Good+ dust jacket (some wear to the spine ends and panel corners, unnecessary tape strengthening to the verso at the spine ends and rear flap fold's bottom, prior owner's name and address to the rear free endpaper). Set in Haiti, he novel explores the terrorism and political suppression which took place during the rule of François "Papa Doc" Duvalier and his secret police, the Tonton Macoute and provided the basis for the 1967 movie of the same name starring Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Alec Guinness, Peter Ustinov, James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, Paul Ford and Lillian Gish, a film for which Graham Greene wrote the screenplay.
