Sitting on the Courthouse Bench [Signed]; An Oral History of Grundy Virginia

Chapel Hill: Tryon Publishing Company, Inc., 2000. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Fine, Superior, copy of the first edition, first printing, in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY LEE SMITH on the title page. Originally built at the banks of the Levisa River in the Appalachian Mountains of western Virginia, the town of Grundy was repeatedly flooded. These floods caused tremendous damage to the town and eventually resulted in the permanent closure of a number of local businesses. In order to save the town, it was decided to move the majority of the town to higher ground, a process that began in 2001. Grundy being the town in which Lee Smith was born, Smith took a particular interest in the community and the plans to relocate it. This collection of oral histories of the town is richly illustrated with over 140 photographs and helps to preserve the history of Grundy in its original location. In our experience, signed copies of the book are quite uncommon. A Fine, Superior, copy, SIGNED BY LEE SMITH. Fine / fine. Item #2966
