The Piano Teacher [SCARCE Uncorrected Page Proofs]; [Die Klavierspielerin]

New York: Weidenfeld & Nicholson, 1988. First Edition, First Printing. Wrappers. A Fine copy of the SCARCE Uncorrected Page Proofs for the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original blue printed wrappers (some fading to the spine and wrapper edges). Originally published in 1983 by Rowohlt Verlag in German as Die Klavierspielerin, "The Piano Teacher" is the first of Jelinek's novels to be translated into English. The Guardian newspaper described the book as "visceral" and "disturbing", and the novel provided the basis for the 2001 French-language erotic psychological thriller film, written and directed by Michael Haneke. At the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, the film won the Grand Prix and the two leads, Isabelle Huppert and Benoît Magimel, won the prizes for Best Actress and Best Actor. Jelinek won the 2004 Nobel Prize in Literature for her "musical flow of voices and counter-voices in novels and plays that, with extraordinary linguistic zeal, reveal the absurdity of society's clichés and their subjugating power". A Fine copy of the SCARCE Uncorrected Page Proofs for this highly-notable novel. Fine. Item #1000
