Old Christmas: From the Sketch Book of Washington Irving

New York: Dodge Publishing Company, [No Date Stated]. [No Edition Stated]. Hardcover. A Very Good copy of this later, but relatively early, printing of Washington Irving's tale "Old Christmas", replete with illustrations designed by Randolph Caldecott and arranged and engraved by J.D. Cooper, in the Publisher's original cloth with the spine and front board illustrated and decorated in gilt. The tale was first published in 1876 and contains five chapters: Christmas (which can itself be read as an independent short story), The Stage-coach, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and The Christmas Dinner. This copy bears a gift presentation from Katherine Putnam to Alfred Putnam dated "Christmas, 1905". The Table of Contents and its preceding leaf are unopened and the leading edge, as are several of the blank leaves at the end of the volume. A Very Good copy of this notable tale by this important writer, the first American literary man to receive international acclaim, the first American Man of Letters to earn his living solely by his pen, and the first American author to set his tales solidly in the United States. Of Irving, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow stated: "We feel a just pride in his renown as an author, not forgetting that, to his other claims upon our gratitude, he adds also that of having been the first to win for our country an honourable name and position in the History of Letters". A Very Good copy. Very good. Item #1031
