The Old Gringo [Gringo viejo]

New York: Farrar , Straus and Giroux, 1985. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in a Fine dust jacket; a novel set in Mexico in 1914 centered around American writer Ambrose Bierce and his last days in Mexico spent among Pancho Villa's soldiers. As Fuentes stated: "What started this novel was my admiration for Ambrose Bierce and for his Tales of Soldiers and Civilians. I was fascinated with the idea of a man who fought in the United States Civil War and dies in a Mexican civil war." Bierce's disappearance in Mexico has never been explained and this novel, in English translation, became the first novel by a Mexican writer to become a bestseller in the United States and was nominated for the Ritz Paris Hemingway Award as Best Novel of 1985. The book provided the basis for the 1986 film of the same name Jane Fonda, Gregory Peck, and Jimmy Smits. A Fine copy of this highly-notable work. Fine / fine. Item #2686
