[The "Madman" featured in the book was [William C. Minor, an American army surgeon and one of the largest contributors of quotations to John Murray for use in the Oxford English Dictionary. Minor sent his contributions while being held in Broadmoor (an asylum) after he murdered another man, George Merrett.] The book was first published in the UK under the title "The Surgeon of Crowthorne: A Tale of Murder, Madness and the love of Words" and was published in America under the title "The Professor and the Madman".
