"Temporal Power" A Study in Supremacy

New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1902. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original green cloth (some fading to the cloth, rubbing to the spine ends and board corners). Corelli (likely an illegitimate child of Dr. Charles Mackay and his mistress, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Mills) was a tremendously popular author and, from the publication of her first novel "A Romance of Two Worlds" in 1886 until World War I, she became a favorite of Queen Victoria and sales of Corelli's novels exceeded the combined sales of her popular contemporaries Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, and Rudyard Kipling. She was the only author invited to the coronation of Edward VII which took place on August 9, 1902 (the year in which this novel was published), and counted Mark Twain, Ouida, the Empress Frederick of Germany (as well as many other writers and members of royalty) as her friends. Tennyson praise Corelli for her work Ardath (1889), the work which Corelli considered to be her best, and "Temporal Power", a work seeming to be a guide to the King, is considered by many to be among her best works. A Very Good copy. Very good. Item #2722
