New York: H. W. Wilson Company, 1950. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, of the 1950 revision of this work by Joseph Nathan Kane containing numerous Famous First Facts, including those discovered by additional research undertaken since, as well as those based on matters which have taken place since, publication of Kane's first (1933) compilation of famous first facts. Thus this edition contains the material found in "Famous First Facts" (1933), the material contained in "More First Facts" (1935), and more. This copy has a WONDERFUL PROVENANCE, having been THE COPY OF RENOWNED BIBLIOGRAPHER JACOB BLANCK and has been cleverly and appropriately inscribed by Kane to Blanck on the front free endpaper as follows: "To Jacob Blanck / "FIRST IN BIBLIOGRAPHY" // Sincerely // Joseph Nathan Kane". Blank's ownership stamp (with a small mark on it) is affixed to the front pastedown. The volume is in Very Good condition with some marking and rubbing, as well as some spots, to the cloth. The rear hinge (internal) has been cracked open. An errata slip regarding the first Air Mail ever flown has been typed on a separate slip of paper and is affixed at the left margin of page 15, presumably by or for Jacob Blank, stating that the "fact" provided in the text lacks authenticity). The slip shows some typewriter key damage. Another slip regarding the first use of the Dollar sign appears to have been clipped from another publication and is affixed to the left margin of page 167 -- the slip provides further information on the matter and contains a short note in pencil -- presumably by Blanck. The entry for "lithograph" on page 264 has beside it an "o" added in pencil to refer to a note in the bottom margin reading "o ? See DAB" with "DAB" underscored. Yet another original slip of typed paper regarding wood pulp paper is affixed to the inner margin of page 329 and is dated "(March 14, 1961)". On page 484 a pencil note has been added with respect to the entry for "Woman newspaper editor" stating: "See Brigham / Journals & Journeymen - P. 74". Page 535 (part of the volume's Index by Years) shows seven pencil marks in the right margin adjacent to entries appearing there. The volume also contains an Index by Days, a Names Index, and a Geographical Index. These marks and inserts are living demonstrations of the care and thoroughness characteristic of the great Jacob Blank's bibliographical work. A Very Good copy, being JACOB BLANCK'S COPY of this notable and useful volume with several additions thereto apparently added by Blanck, a wonderful illustration of the great Bibliographer at work commentating upon and correcting the work of the famous provider of widely-used reference works Joseph Nathan Kane, CLEVERLY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY JOSEPH NATHAN KANE TO THE RENOWNED BIBLIOGRAPHER JACOB BLANCK. A wonderful Association Copy of this notable reference work. Very good. Item #2782
