The Complete Works of Charles F. Browne, better known as "Artemus Ward"

London: Chatto and Windus, circa 1880. Hardcover. A Very Good or better copy of the first edition, first printing in the Publisher's original brown cloth (some wear to the spine ends and to the leading corners of each board, modest foxing to the first few pages as well as some age toning throughout) containing the complete published works of Charles F. Browne who wrote under the name "Artemus Ward", with the requisite 32 Page catalogue to the rear. Ward wrote humorous stories and is considered by some to be America's first standup comedian, and his writing was greatly popular both in his native America and in England. He became the editor of the New York humour magazine "Vanity Fair" in 1860 and as also ventured out as a lecturer whose humor attracted large audiences. After attending one of his performances, Brett Harte described his presentation as having "humor that belongs to the country of boundless prairies, limitless rivers, and stupendous cataracts--that fun which overlies the surface of our national life, which is met in the stage, rail-car, canal and flat-boat, which bursts out over camp-fires and around bar-room stoves." Ward was President Lincoln's favorite author and, even in the dark time of America's civil war, Lincoln read Ward's latest episode, "Outrage in Utiky", also known as High-Handed Outrage at Utica to his Cabinet and then read to them his Emancipation Proclamation. Later editions of this book were published soon after this First Edition and copies of the First Edition, presented here, are surprisingly scarce, especially when in collectable condition. A Very Good or better copy. Very good. Item #2857
