Fragonard 1732-1806 [Jean-Honore Fragonard]; STILL IN THE ORIGINAL PACKAGING

Paris: Goupil and Cie, 1918. First Thus. Wrappers. A presumably Near Fine to Fine copy of this beautifully illustrated biography of the Rococo French painter and printmaker, Fragonard, one of the most prolific artists active in the last decades of the Ancien Regime. This copy remains bound in its original pale green wrappers and remains in its original brown paper packaging with a label to the spine side. [The brown paper packaging shows wear and tear.] The Volume is called to contain a frontispiece together with twenty-seven plates which provide examples of Fragonard's works. The frontispiece and each illustration is called to have its own protective tissue guard having the name of the relevant illustration printed in red thereon. The book was written by the French historian, Poet, and Art Historian Pierre de Nolhac, Curator of the Palace of Versailles Museum from 1892-1919. Jean-Honore Fragonard produced more than 550 paintings and numerous drawings and etchings. His best known work is perhaps "La "Balançoire" ("The Swing"), an oil painting which many regard it as a masterpiece of the rococo era. (A plate of this painting can be found opposite page 84 of this volume. [An earlier Limited Edition was published in 1906.] This is clearly an unopened and unread copy and is EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO THE MARKET AS SUCH. Very good +. Item #2909
