Joseph Conrad: Life and Letters [IN THE RARE PUBLISHER'S SLIPCASE AND WITH PUBLISHER'S INSERTS]

Garden City: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1927. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, issued in two volumes, with two Publisher's inserts loosely laid in, wearing the SCARCE Fine dust jackets (some of the usual light sunning to the spines but less than we have seen), in a Fine example of the original Publisher's SLIPCASE (a touch of damage to the label and a small pencil price at the upper left corner of that side of the box. The original publisher's blue cloth is lettered and decorated in gilt on the spines of each volume and each front board bears a facsimile of Joseph Conrad's signature in gilt. The top edge of each closed page block is in gilt as well. The set contains a frontispiece in each volume and the two volumes together contain a total of 12 plates and four facsimiles, including two tipped-in. The set resides in a RARE FINE EXAMPLE of the ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S SLIPCASE with the printed label on the front side (captioned "The authorized life of the great and adventurous writer, with many Conrad letters hitherto unpublished.") Volume One contains two Publisher's inserts loosely laid in (one being an advertisement for this set and the other listing Conrad titles and offering a copy of for the 1924 publication titled "Joseph Conrad - A Sketch" for 10 cents (a Very Good copy of which is included as a free Extra to the Buyer of the herein-described set). The "Sketch" wears the Publisher's original wrappers and shows separation of front wrap at the staples as well as some general wear. In Very Good condition, the "Sketch" is holding together well and presents a 32-page sketch of Joseph Conrad as well as a brief Bibliography of his works. As part of his work to produce "Joseph Conrad: Life and Letters", Jean-Aubry gathered approximately 2,000 Conrad letters. Those in private hands he returned to their respective owners and dozens of them have since disappeared. (Some of Conrad's letters to John Galsworthy are known only due to this work.) In his presentation of some of the letters, Jean-Aubry left out matters that he, a product of his era, considered too delicate to include or which would, in his judgment, reflect poorly on Conrad or his correspondents. Notwithstanding Aubry's omissions, the set was a significant step forward in Conrad studies. This is a REMARKABLE SET OF THIS NOTABLE WORK in a FINE EXAMPLE OF THE PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL SLIPCASE, with PUBLISHER'S INSERTS loosely laid in and with a Very Good copy of the "Sketch". The best and most complete set that we ever have seen which is, as such, QUITE RARE INDEED. Fine / fine. Item #2935
