New York: The New Door, 1925. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing of Anne Ryan's Debut Book, in the Publisher's original red cloth with the front board and spine lettered in gilt. The book shows some sunning to the spine as well as some mild rubbing to the spine ends and leading board corners, as well as some faint marking best seen with the book is held in the light at an angle to the viewer's eye(s). Ryan (1889-1954) began as a Poet but then turned to Art and became a member of the early generation of New York School Abstract Expressionist artists. When she saw the collages of Kurt Schwitters in 1948 dedicated herself to that medium. According to Deborah Solomon (see Solomon's "The Hidden Legacy of Anne Ryan" in The New York Criterion, January 1989, pp. 53-58.) Ryan, as a Poet, when she viewed Schwitters’s collages “she recognized the visual equivalent of her sonnets – discrete images packed together in an extremely compressed space." [see Solomon's "The Hidden Legacy of Anne Ryan" in The New York Criterion, January 1989, pp. 53-58.] Though she continued to work in Poetry, she turned her efforts primarily to Art. [Mixing the two, Ryan wrote a series of poems in the late 1930s and 40s titled "Lines to a Young Painter". Her paintings have appeared in many Exhibitions and are held in numerous collections. An EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE copy of Anne Ryan's DEBUT BOOK. Very good. Item #3036
