A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original brown cloth with the front board lettered in red and red surrounded by gilt, as well as decorated in black, red, and gilt, and the spine lettered in gilt and red and decorated in black and red. The volume shows some marking and general signs of use and within shows tide marking to the upper margin of each leaf. Illustrated with a tissue-guarded frontispiece and twenty (20) additional illustrations, each book's chapter text beings with an enlarged and illustrated letter. James Otis Kaler (1848 - 1912), who wrote under the name James Otis, was an American journalist and author of children’s literature. The work presented herein is one of the author's earliest books and is the first novel in his Toby Tyler trilogy (the other two being Mr. Stubbs' Brother (1882) and Old Ben, The Friend of Toby Tyler and Mr. Stubb's Brother (1911) Copies of the first edition, first printing, of this first book in the trilogy are rather SCARCE to the market.
