A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing in a Fine slipcase, a beautiful book in a lovely slipcase, richly illustrated with beautiful illustrations, with well-written text and wonderful illustrations showing how Embroidery once was done. The volume shows a tiny indent to the front board's leading edge, and a bit of rubbing to the spine lettering, and a small rub to the lower portion of the front board. The leading board corners remain sharp and without any of the common bumping. Charles Germain de Saint-Aubin (1721-1786) was a French draftsman and embroidery designer to King Louis XV and published L'Art du Brodeur ("Art of the Embroiderer") in 1770 and this volume presents a translation of such work and a facsimile of the original 18th Century text and illustrations. A talented artist, he also was known for his drawings and etchings. His work is held by the British Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and elsewhere. A Fine copy of this remarkable work and difficult to find with both the book and slipcase in a condition as nice as shown by this copy. Very Good + to Near Fine. Item #3060
