A Fine copy of the First Appearance of most of this Trollope work, excerpted from Good Words magazine and bound in 3/4 red leather with coordinated red boards. The novel centers on of a young woman (Marie) working at the only hotel in Lorraine. She and the hotel owner's son, (George) fall in love, but the father/uncle refused to consent to their engagement, believing that each could make a better match. The son, angered by his father's refusal leaves to run another hotel in another town and ends communication with his family. At the encouragement of her uncle, Marie, thinking that she as been forsaken and acting at her Uncle's encouragement, accepts the proposal of a prosperous commercial man who often visited the hotel. Hearing of the engagement, the determined George returns home. Overjoyed by his son's return, the father/uncle consents to George's marriage to Marie. Of the novel, Huge Walpole declared the tale to be "...not only Trollope's very best shorter book, but also one of the most charming idylls in English literature. [NOTE: per Sadleir: "The first installment of The Golden Lion of Granpere was published in Good Words for January 1872, and the story ran uninterruptedly until August 1872. It was illustrated with twenty-four drawings by F. A. Fraser." The book edition was published in May, 1872.
