The Way We Live Now

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1875. First American Edition, 1st Printing. Hardcover. A Very Good + copy of the first American Edition, first printing in the Publisher's original green cloth which collates properly with Walter Smith's excellent Bibliography of Anthony Trollope's first American editions. The volume shows the rubbing to the spine ends and board corners usually seen with this edition, along with the common wear to each board's bottom edge and the hinges remain solid (although there is a short crack and a spot of wear to the rear pastedown and facing side of the adjoining endpaper). Nevertheless, this copy is in meaningfully better, and is a good bit brighter, than we typically see. Although Trollope's general reputation as an author had begun to fade a bit, he resurrected it with this novel. The novel was inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s, and its plot, including greed and dishonesty, manipulation of markets, and an insincere declaration of love, remains current even today. Of the novel, Robert McCrum of The Guardian (an English newspaper) stated: "Inspired by the author's fury at the corrupt state of England, and dismissed by critics at the time, The Way We Live Now is recognized as Trollope's masterpiece." The paper further stated: "...if there is one Trollope novel, written in a white heat during 1873, that rescues him from accusations of shallow commerciality, and puts him in the premier league, it must be The Way We Live Now." In 2015, the paper ranked the novel as number 22 in its 100 Best Novels published in English and, in this seller's opinion, the novel remains current even today. Very good +. Item #3875
