Boys and Girls of Bookland

A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (some modest general wear, scattered foxing -- lacking the scarce dust jacket), illustrated by the great Jessie Willcox Smith who illustrated over 60 books including Louisa May Alcott's" Little Women" and "An Old-Fashioned Girl", Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Evangeline", and "A Child's Garden of Verses" by Robert Louis Stevenson. She also illustrated all of the Good Housekeeping covers from December 1917 to 1933. Per Nudelman: "In a large-format book published in 1923 by the Cosmopolitan Book Corporation entitled Boys and Girls of Bookland, Smith contributed eleven full-page color illustrations of various characters from classic children's books. One can find in this book delightful illustrations of Alice in Wonderland, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, The Little Lame Prince, David Copperfield, Little Women, Tiny Tim, Jackanapes and others. Many of these illustrations had appeared just months before this publication as covers for Good Housekeeping, and their appearance for the first time in a picture book was very well received by the public. The illustration for Little Women is an excellently balanced composition with the four central characters being framed on each side by red curtains, and the heads of three of the figures are set off by the pale yellow drapes in the background." (Edward D. Nudelman, Jessie Willcox Smith: American Illustrator, pp. 42/43). The copy described herein is the true first edition, first printing and should not be confused with the McKay printing of the same year. A Very Good copy. Very good +. Item #774
