The Screwtape Letters with Screwtape Proposes A Toast (with a Foreword by C. S. Lewis)

London: Folio Society, 2008. First Thus. Hardcover. A Fine copy of the first Folio Society edition, first printing with both titles, a Foreword by C. S. Lewis, and Illustrations by Papas, in a Fine slipcase with slight marking to the spine panel; the primary title presents 31 letters from Screwtape, an urbane elder statesman of the underworld to his nephew, a novice devil, on how to capture the soul of a Christian. As noted by Lewis in his Foreword: "It was during the second German war that the letters of Screwtape first appeared in the (now extinct) Guardian. I hope they did not hasten its death, but they certainly lost it one reader. A country clergyman wrote to the editor withdrawing his subscription on the ground that 'much of the advice given in these letters seemed to him not only erroneous but positively diabolical'. " A Fine copy in a Fine slipcase. This Folio Society first edition, first printing, is, as of the creation of this description, SURPRISINGLY SCARCE to the market, especially when in a condition as nice as is this copy. Fine.
