London: Folio Society, 2007. First Thus. Hardcover. A Fine, Superior, copy of the first Folio Society edition with an Introduction by Sue MacGregor and Illustrations by Natacha Ledwidge, in a Fine slipcase with some slight surface marking -- no dust jacket, as issued; a highly-regarded epistolary novel taken from the author's two decade correspondence with Frank Doel, the chief buyer for Marks & Co, a London bookshop founded in the 1920s and located at Cambridge Circus - 84, Charing Cross Road, London, England. As a result of their correspondence, Hanff became involved in the lives of the shop's staff, shared details of her life in Manhattan, and sent the staff food parcels during Britain's postwar shortages. The book provided the basis for the 1987 movie of the same name starring Anne Bancroft as Helen Hanff and Anthony Hopkins as Frank Doehl. [It also served as the basis for a stage play and for a television play.] As of the writing of this description, copies of this edition are surprisingly scarce to the market, and this is easily the nicest copy of the book that we ever have seen as it lacks the rubbing to the book's front board illustrations that we have seen on other copies. A Fine, Superior, copy in a Fine slipcase. SCARCE. Fine. Item #820
