The Virginians

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1858, 1859. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Very Good copy of the first book edition, first printing, first state with "actresses" on page 207 and with Chapters 47 and 48 being wrongly numbered, bound in 3/4 green leather with marbled boards and endpapers and with the spines being lettered and decorated in gilt and with each spine dated "1857", being the copy of Arthur Scholefield with his bookplate the front pastedown of each volume. The leather shows general wear and repair, and the leaves show some scattered foxing, the heaviest of which is at the earliest leaves in each volume. A historical novel and sequel to Thackeray's "Henry Esmond", the novel is built around Henry Esmond's twin grandsons, George and Henry Warrington. Henry Warrington's romantic entanglements with an older woman lead to his taking a commission in the British army and thus to his fighting under the command of General Wolfe at the capture of Quebec. However, upon the outbreak of American's War of Independence, Henry takes the revolutionary side. His twin brother George, then serving as a British officer, resigns his commission in order to avoid taking up arms against his brother. A Very Good copy. Very good. Item #837
