These Twain

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1915. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original blue cloth with the spine lettered and decorated in gilt and the front board in blind (closed page block shows some staining and foxing to the top edge as well as foxing to the other edges, such foxing slightly affecting the leading margin of some pages), lacking the scarce dust jacket; the third novel in Arnold Bennett's Clayhanger Family series of novels, a series of works centered on Edwin Clayhanger, who, after leaving school, takes over the family business. In "These Twain", Edwin, although freed from his father's controlling influence and presumably then free to run his business as well as his life, finds his freedom diminished by his wife Hilda's caprices and her opinions on matters that she feels herself free to express -- including opinions on how Edwin how to run his business --- opinions that were in that day not socially permitted to be expressed by those of the weaker sex, a circumstance that causes Edwin to have doubts about their marriage and to fall into anger and frustration. A Very Good copy -- a nicer copy than we usually see. Very good. Item #862
