The Captain of the Susan Drew [First Appearance in Print]

Boston: The Boston Sunday Globe, 1912. First Edition, First Printing. Wrappers. A Very Good copy of the first appearance in print of this Jack London short story (some toning, soiling, and minor tears and chips to the wrappers), being the cover story of the Boston Sunday Globe's semi-monthly magazine section for November 24,1912. Notably, the Jack London Society site published a January 12, 2015 article under the headline "FOR JACK LONDON’S BIRTHDAY, READ “THE CAPTAIN OF THE SUSAN DREW” IN THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL" noting the Library of Congress had highlighted the San Francisco Call's printing of the story which had been was published in the San Francisco Call's December 1, 1912 issue. That paper had advertised that in "the Magazine Section of The Call on December 1 will be presented "The Captain of the Susan Drew." by Jack London. Eleven Other London Stories Will Follow". Also of interest is a 1912 advertisement in the New York Sun (newspaper) stating: 'JACK London is writing all of his short stories for us this year! None will appear in any other magazine! THE FIRST ONE IS CALLED "The Captain of the Susan Drew" AND WILL APPEAR IN THE NOVEMBER 24th ISSUE Don't miss this opportunity of reading the best, most virile Fiction by the highest priced short-story writer in America. We will publish one Jack London short story a month for the next year. Other splendid Fiction and Special Articles, both beautifully illustrated in every issue of The Semi-Monthly Magazine Section of The New York Sunday Sun.' We have not been able to locate any record of the called-for New York Sun November 24, 1912 publication of the story (which may have been published on the same date as our Boston Sunday Globe presentation of the story was published). Also of interest is a July 1931 publication of "Physical Culture" containing an article titled "Poppy Cargo" by Jack London which it declares to be "the literary sensation of 1931"; however, scholarly research into London's career has established that the story is a slightly revised version of "The Captain of the Susan Drew". In any event, our Boston Sunday Globe magazine is the only copy of the first publication of this, one of Jack London's last short stories, that we ever have seen. OCLC locates an [unidentified] periodical “article" of the same title Dec 1, 1912, held by two libraries [which we presume to be the San Francisco Call publication] and only Dartmouth is shown to hold a copy of the November 24, 1912 Boston Sunday Globe publication of the tale. A Very Good copy of the first appearance in print of this Jack London tale. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE INDEED and, we think, A RARE AND REMARKABLE SURVIVAL. Very good. Item #900
