Washington DC: The Associated Publishers, 1938. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (slight handling soil, moderate rubbing to the board corners and to the volume's edges, a few bends to some of the page block's leading edge, small gap between spine head and the closed page block, hinges cracked -- no dust jacket), INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY JANE D. SHACKELFORD on the front pastedown as follows: "Inscribed for / Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Shearer / - / Jane Dabney Shackelford / July 18, 1939". Shackelford's DEBUT BOOK, a reader for students in the elementary grades intended by her "...to put into the hands of the elementary children and easy, interesting book that will help them to appreciate the traditions, aspirations, and achievements of the Negro race." As the book was intended primarily for use by elementary school, we expect that most copies have been lost to time. A Very Good example of this early effort to educate young black Americans about their history. A Very Good copy, INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY JANE DABNEY SHACKELFORD. RATHER UNCOMMON, SCARCE WHEN SIGNED. Very good. Item #910
