Jesus' Son

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1992. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (some spotting to the closed page block's top edge), in a Fine dust jacket (some toning to the verso's edges); the award-winning author's fifth book, his debut collection of short stories, being one of the books for which is is best known. The book presents eleven linked short stories which together relate tales of addicts living in rural America who abuse drugs and commit both petty crimes and murder, with each story being narrated by a drug abuser named "Funkhead". Johnson took the book's name from the song "Heroin" by the Velvet Underground ("When I put a spike into my vein / And I tell you things aren't quite the same / When I'm rushing on my run / And I feel just like Jesus' son"). Notably, Johnson himself was a recovered addict. The book provided the basis for the well-received 1999 movie of the same name (a quite uncommon feat for a collection of short stories) starring Billy Crudup, Samantha Morton, Denis Leary, Jack Black, Dennis Hopper, and Holly Hunter. A Fine copy of this highly-notable Debut. Copies in a condition as nice as is this copy are rather uncommon to the market. Fine / fine. Item #917
