Description

A Very Good copy of the first illustrated edition of this rather scarce Trollope novel in the Publisher's original blue cloth with the spine and front board lettered in gilt and decorated in gilt and black (some undulation to the spine, spotting to each board, small black mark to the rear board, spine ends somewhat rubbed, board corners rubbed through, bookplate of James McKean to the front pastedown featuring a dog and the motto "J'ai Bonne Esperance" meaning "I have good hope.") Written by Trollope based in part upon the experiences one of his sons had as an emigrant to Australia, the story first appeared as the 1873 Christmas Number of "The Graphic", followed by the quite rare first, and unillustrated, book edition (1874), with respect to which Sadleir states: "Harry Heathcote' in its genuine (unillustrated) first edition is of extreme rarity. No price records exist. Should a good copy come up for sale it will fetch as much as the most frenzied Trollopian present can afford to pay. It may perhaps be worth noting that in 1927 a good copy of the second issue (with illustrations) was offered by a bookseller for five guineas." The first edition was then quickly followed by this illustrated edition, issued for the 1874 Christmas market, containing The Graphic's 6 illustrations reduced in size, and using the first edition sheets (trimmed for this edition). As Sadleir notes, the true first edition of the novel is one of the scarcest of all Trollope titles. This first illustrated edition is itself uncommon and presents an opportunity for the Trollope collector to obtain the first edition sheets at a reasonable price. A Very Good copy of a scarce Trollope title.
