Description

ORIGINAL DRAWING OF GADS HILL (Dickens House) by Tennyson family Member. n ORIGINAL DRAWING BY A MEMBER OF THE TENNYSON FAMILY of GADS HILL, the country home of CHARLES DICKENS, executed in pencil. The drawing is inscribed "_T Home of Charles Dickens" at the upper left corner and "from _T Wilderness Augt 3rd 1870" The initials are in each case written vertically and may be Emily Tennyson's monograph. Wilderness was the Tennyson summerhouse at Farrington on the Isle of Wight. The drawing comes from the Ellis family and presumably sent by a Tennyson (Emily Tennyson??) to Charles Ellis, a wine merchant with his own literary aspirations who served both the Tennyson family and the Dickens family. The drawing is dated August 3, I870, less than two months after Dickens died on Jan 9, 1870.A wonderful item associated with two of England's (and the world's) most important literary men.
