PRESENTLY DISCOUNTED . WAS $425. A Very Good copy of the TRUE FIRST PUBLICATION of "Fables" by Robert Louis Stevenson, published in two issues of Longman's Magazine, being No. CLIV / August 1895 and No. CLV / September 1895. Although long attracted to the Fable as a form of literature, Stevenson devoted his efforts primarily to other works. (He did, however, characterize several of his stories, including "Will of the Mill" and "Markheim", as essentially being Fables in their aims and methods. From time to time he worked on what he considered to be Fables in the strict sense, i.e. written in a brief and concentrated form, and, as of early 1888, he concluded that he had enough of these short Fables which, when combined with some of his longer ones, were sufficient to together form a proper book. Thereafter distracted by his Pacific Voyage and his taking up residence in Somoa, Stevenson never got around to publishing the contemplated book. Subsequent to Stevenson's death in December, 1894, his representatives provided these twenty short and concentrated fables to Longmans for publication in their magazine and, in these two issues of Longman's Magazine, they appeared in print for the first time. Each volume of the Magazine here presented is in Very Good condition with some foxing -- primarily to the wrappers and page edges, and some loss at the lower spine. The August issue also shows a small push near the center of its front wrapper. With 20 Fables, these volumes constitute Stevenson's longest collection of short stories in number (although not in length, of course). Each volume contains a prior owner's name in pencil to the upper margin of the front wrapper, showing a unity of ownership. Due to their ephemeral nature, not many of these pairs would have survived to the present day. A Very Good copy of this Literary Debut and QUITE SCARCE INDEED
