A Very Good copy of the first US edition, second issue (with the Franklin Press imprint on the title page's verso and with the errors in the text corrected), bound in Binding State A, of this comedic novel in which two London boys, Edward, Prince of Wales, and Tom Canty, a street beggar, meet by pure chance and discover that they are, in outward appearance, identical. On a whim the two decide to exchange clothes and roles -- a situation that for a short while, greatly alters the lives of both youngsters. Dressed in rags, the Prince wanders through London's boisterous neighborhoods, making his life among the lower classes and enduring the inevitable resultant series of hardships. Meanwhile, Tom Canty, now living in Royal luxury suffers a constant fear that his true identity will be discovered. This is a Very Good copy with the binding somewhat askew, general wear to the covers, and rubbing through at the board edges and corners.
