Dorris, both writer and scholar, was the first Chair of Native American Studies at Dartmouth. The book won the 1993 Scott O'Dell Award for historical fiction -- an award established to encourage authors to write historical fiction and given annually to an author of a meritorious book published in the previous year for children or young adults.
