A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (lacking the scarce dust jacket) in the Publisher's original red cloth (some wear to the spine ends and board corners, light shelf wear to the board bottoms, common soiling to the closed page block's edges). As an art student in Paris, Norris was influenced by the novels of Emil Zola and their adoption of a naturalist writing style (which emphasizes observation and the scientific method in the fictional portrayal of reality, are written from a disinterested point of view, and often portray determinism -- that a character's fate has been decided for him by forces beyond his control.) "Vandover and the Brute", which Norris wrote in the late 19th Century and which was not published until approximately twelve years after his death, centers on three college friends preparing to become successful, one of which comes to ruin as a result of his degenerate lifestyle. A Very Good copy.
