Description

An Original Sketch book by June Ryan (presumably then a young girl) containing sixteen pages, each of which has at least one original drawing or sketch. [It appears that a few pages have been excised -- perhaps due to the artist's dissatisfaction with what she had drawn on them. Most of the work is in color.] A few of the pages are signed and dated -- being dated one of 1939, 1940, or 1941. The Book appears to been manufactured and sold (as a blank sketch book) and to the exterior side of the front and back there has been attached front and rear covers of a more durable material which have been affixed -- one on each cover -- with leather stitching which has offset to the page edges. The front cover hosts a drawing of a female in fancy dress. Some of the drawings identify their respective subjects and include Anglo-Indian actress Merle Oberon as "Cathy" (a role she played in the highly acclaimed film "Wuthering Heights" opposite Laurence Olivier; 1939); Deanna Durban (a Canadian singer and actress who made her first feature-length film "Three Smart Girls" (1936) at age 14). The movie was a big hit and made her a big star and, in 1938, at the age of 17, she was awarded the Academy Juvenile Award. The drawing of Oberon is signed and dated by Ryan "1940).; Virginia Weidler (an American child actress and Hollywood Star) who was in, among other movies, "The Philadelphia Story" (1940) in which she played Dinah Lord, the witty younger sister of Tracy Lord (played by Katharine Hepburn). The Weidler image also is signed by Ryan and dated 1940; Queen Elizabeth as a young girl; Princess Margaret as a young girl; a second drawing of Queen Elizabeth as a young girl -- this one signed and dated by Ryan 1941. Other sketches and drawings are present as well. A nice example of a young girl's sketch book.
