Description

A Fine copy of the first Canadian edition, first printing, first state -- with only one copyright page rather than the two found in later printings (small mark to the front free endpaper), in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY MICHAEL ONDAATJE on the title page -- both book and jacket being without any indication of any prizes won by the novel; the fourth novel from this Sri Lankan-born Canadian poet, novelist, editor, and filmmaker, a novel which won the 2000 Giller Prize (a Canadian literary award), the 2000 Prix Médicis étranger (a French literary award given annually to an author whose talent exceeds the author's fame), the 2000 Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize (a literary award awarded to books about the Pacific Rim and South Asia last given in 2008), the 2001 Irish Times International Fiction Prize, and, in 2000, The Governor General's Award for English-language fiction (a Canadian literary award that annually recognizes one Canadian writer for a fiction book written in English). The novel is centered around Anil [Tissera], a Sri Lankan who left her native land to study both in Britain and the United States, becoming a forensic pathologist. As part of a Human Rights Investigation by the United Nations, she returns to her native Sri Lanka while that country is in the midst of a civil war where, along with archaeologist Sarath Diyasena, she discovers the skeleton of a recently murdered man in an ancient burial ground which is also a government-protected zone. Believing the murder to be politically motivated, the two work to identify the dead man and to bring about justice for the nameless victims of the war. A Fine copy of this highly-regarded novel, SIGNED BY MICHAEL ONDAATJE.
