Writing under the pen name "Marie Corelli, Mary Mackay enjoyed great success as a writer and, prior to World War I, sales of her novels exceeded the combined sales of her now better-known contemporaries, including Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, and Rudyard Kipling. She also was a favorite writer of Winston-Churchill, Randolph Churchill, and Britain's Royal Family. Set a the turn to the Twentieth Century, "Temporal Power" depicts the machinations and troubles concerning the Royal family and the politicians in power in a fictional England. At that time, sales of her novels averaged 175,000 copies, and Temporal Power achieved a first day record of 120,000. It also provided the basis for a 1916 movie directed by G.B. Samuelson.
