The Golden Lion of Granpere [First American in Installments]

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1872. First Edition. Wrappers. "...not only Trollope's best shorter book, but one of the most charming idylls in English Literature....It has all the colour and richness and cohesion of something done irresistibly." [Hugh Walpole, 1904.] A Very Good set of the first American Edition, first printing in installments, being in eight (8) monthly issues of Harper's New Monthly Magazine starting in February of 1872 and continuing through and including September of that year, illustrated by F. A. Fraser. [The First English edition, published by Tinsley in 1872, was unillustrated.] Several of the issues together contain the first appearance of portions of the novel in America and all eight (8) monthly installments together present the entire novel. [Harper also published the entire novel in both wrappers and hardcover in July, 1872.] Each issue is in its original wrappers and shows moderate wear. [Additionally, the front wrappers show some stamps, embossments, or marks as shown in the images.] The first American edition was taken from the English periodical "Good Words" and the full novel, with illustrations, was published by Harper in July of that year. Consequently, the full novel was published in America before the serialization was completed, but not until numerous issues of Harper's New Monthly Magazine containing part of the novel (at least February through June, and perhaps July, and with illustrations) were published.] Overall, this copy is in Very Good condition and, in over four decades of our diligent search for Trollope rarities, this is ONLY THE SECOND COMPLETE SET we ever have seen. QUITE SCARCE INDEED. Very good. Item #3724
