London: Printed for W. Osborne and T. Griffin, in St. Paul’s Church-Yard; and J. Mozley, Gainsbrough, M.DCC.LXXXV. [1785]. New Edition. Hardcover. SAMUEL JOHNSON - THE POETICAL WORKS • 1785 Complete in one volume. A new edition. London: Printed for W. Osborne and T. Griffin, in St. Paul’s Church-Yard; and J. Mozley, Gainsbrough, MDCCLXXXV [1785]. Tall 12mo (16 cm) bound in modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt-lettered spine label, marbled endpapers; viii + 152 pp.; with the two half-title pages called for in ESTC: “Dr. Johnson’s Poetical Works” and “Poems” (the second of these bound in after the title-page). ESTC T42748. The volume shows light browning to the edges of the first and last few leaves; the half-title and last leaf have been professionally repaired; there is a chip to the last leaf with some loss to a few letters; and the first half-title hosts the early ownership signature of Samuel Massey. The volume is otherwise rather clean and sound and has been firmly bound in a rather tight, fresh, and attractive recent three-quarters leather binding with marbled boards. Each pastedown and the facing side of its neighboring free endpaper are also marbled. Thus we have here an attractive early collection of Dr. Johnson's Poetry, published the year after his death. In addition to London: A Satire and other poems, odes, prologues, epitaphs, etc., the collection contains the full text of Johnson’s only play, Irene, A Tragedy. A QUITE ATTRACTIVE COPY. Very Good or better. Item #3809
