Boston: Lilly, Wait, Colman, and Holden, 1832. First Edition, First Printing. That ship took Darwin to the Galapagos and elsewhere in 1831. The Beagle was the British naval vessel aboard which Charles Darwin served as naturalist on a voyage to South America and around the world (1831–36) with Earle as the as the topographical artist and draughtsman for the voyage during which Earle and Darwin became friends. The specimens and observations accumulated on this voyage gave Darwin the essential materials for his theory of evolution by natural selection.]; Arlington, a Novel; and The Contrast, a Novel; Recollection of the Last Ten Years passed in occasional Residences and Journeyings in the Valley of the Mississippi from Pitsburgh and the Missouri to the Gulf of Mexico, and from Florida to the Spanish Frontier, in a Series of Letters to the Rev. James Flint of Salem , Massachusetts. By Timothy Flint, Principal of the Seminary of Rapide, Louisiana; Observationi Semi-serie di un Escule sull' Inghilterra, and Considerations Politiques....and many other contributions as shown in the images on our proprietary Allington site.
[More on Augustus Earle and his family from https://beagleproject.wordpress. com: Augustus Earle was born in 1793 in London to James Earl and Caroline Smyth (he later “extended” his name to “Earle”). James was born in the United States and was part of the Earle family of Massachusetts, which included several famous artists, poets, politicians, inventors, doctors and scientists. For example, Augustus’ uncle Ralph painted sites of the American Revolution and his cousin Ralph Eleaser Whiteside Earl painted portraits. Cousin Ralph was even the official painter of the Andrew Jackson administration (at about the same time Augustus was in Rio). His father (James), sister (Phoebe) and her husband (Denis Dighton) were also artists. So paint seemed to flow in Augustus’ veins.]. Very Good. Item #3817
