Payne (June 9, 1791 – April 10, 1852) was an American actor, poet, playwright, and author who had nearly two decades of a theatrical career and success in London. He is also wrote an 1822 Operetta titled Clari [or the Maid of Milan] which included lyrics of the song titled "Home! Sweet Home!"- a Poem that Payne had written as a college student, the lines of which were converted to a song for which the melody was composed by the noted Englishman Sir Henry Bishop. [Payne had originally written a more elaborate version of the song's melody.] The song (first written by Payne in 1822) was a major hit, led to the Operetta's great success and brought Payne to great fame and the song became widely popular in the United States and the English-speaking world. Abraham Lincoln asked that the song be repeatedy played in the White House upon the death of his son and it was popular during the American Civil War when it was embraced by troops on both sides of the conflict.
