A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing, being two volumes bound together in an elegant three-quarters blue leather and corrordinating blue cloth with the butressed spine labeled in gilt and the closed page block in gilt as well. Within the illustrations are all present at their appropriate locations without any tissue guards. The spine pannel as faded to a greenish hue, and a prior owner's pencil notes to the front free endpaper's verso states that the binding is by Morrell, but there is no other indication thereof other than the beauty and fineness of the binding. In Volume I the half-title is present. The page number for the illustration fifth (5th) illustration titled "THEN THEY ALL MARCHED OUT OF THE ROOM, EACH WITH HIS OWN GLASS" is lacking in Volume I, but the illustration itself is present and faces page 73, and the illustration called to be found facing page 111 instead faces page 113. One word in the text opening Chapter XXXVII has been corrected in pencil to mark out "Mason" after "Peregrine" and to replace it with "Orme". Finally, there is no half-title to text of volume II.
